An open window, a cooling cup of tea, and a familiar piano phrase.

With the window open this afternoon, Schubert's piano music seemed to share the room with everything outside it. A bus passed through a quiet moment. Someone called across the courtyard. I thought about closing the window, then left it as it was and let the sounds come and go.

The phrase I had been waiting for arrived while I was carrying a cup to the table. I stood there for a moment, listening. This was an untidy sort of attention, full of interruptions, but it suited the day. I felt no need to begin again when the piece ended.
