What happens when we return to the same music with a little more time?

I had planned a whole evening of piano music and ended up listening to one short piece three times. The first time I followed the melody. The second time a quieter line caught my ear, and I kept losing the tune I thought I knew. By the third hearing, I had stopped keeping track.

There was no discovery to write down, exactly. Only a change in how familiar the room felt, and how slowly the evening seemed to move. I left the rest of my list for another day. One piece had turned out to be enough company.
